Room Selection for Hotels

Overview

Rooms and Rates is the part of the consumer Property Details Page where travelers review the room options available at a property, compare rate plans and pricing for each option, and weigh details like amenities, cancellation terms, and other attributes before booking. It sits at a high-intent moment in the journey: once a traveler has chosen a property, Rooms and Rates helps them decide which specific room and rate best fits their trip.

PROBLEM OBSERVATIONS

1. Multiple room types are presented side by side, creating a dense comparison experience. 2. Room details and images compete for attention with rate-related choices. 3. Travelers must compare several cancellation options within each room card. 4. Extras and add-ons introduce another layer of choice and price variation. 5. Final pricing appears at the bottom, making it harder to connect the total cost to the selected offer.

RESEARCH INSIGHTS

My proposal is separating room type selection from room rate selection. Instead of forcing travelers to evaluate every room and every rate inline on the page, the hotel details page would first help them compare room types at a higher level. Once a traveler selected a room, its available rates would open in a side sheet, creating a more focused space to compare cancellation options, inclusions, and pricing without overwhelming the main page.

Travelers need help comparing, not just browsing. Prior strategy work framed room selection as a decision moment where confidence can either turn into commitment or collapse into second-guessing and abandonment.

Interaction flow

Start on the Property Details Page

The traveler lands on the PDP and sees room types within the Rooms and Rates section, rather than being forced to process every possible rate detail at once.

Compare room types first

At this stage, the traveler focuses on the differences that matter at the room level, such as room setup, amenities, and fit for their trip. This keeps the first decision focused on choosing the right room rather than prematurely parsing pricing complexity.

Open rates in a side sheet

After selecting a room type, a side sheet opens with the available rate plans for that room. This gives travelers a dedicated comparison space for rate-specific details like refundability, inclusions, and pricing.

Compare rates without losing context

Because the side sheet sits on top of the PDP rather than replacing it, the traveler stays anchored in the overall property context while making a more focused rate decision. This keeps the interaction lightweight and avoids turning the main page into an overly long or cluttered experience.

Move toward booking with more confidence

By breaking the decision into two clearer steps, room type first, rate plan second, the experience helps travelers compare more easily, understand value more quickly, and move forward with less friction

This work was carried through from discovery to delivery, shaped through multiple rounds of iteration, and is slated to ship in Q4 2026.
